Gardening for Bees

Traditionally the attitude towards bees and wasps has been fearful. However, with increased educational programs and information people are beginning to accept and even invite bees into their yards. If you are interested in attracting bees to your yard the key is purple! Purple is a very attractive color to bees. You also want to consider whether the plant is beneficial for nectar or pollen or both. Bees require nectar to create honey and they need the pollen to make bee bread which is a substance that is used to feed larval bees when they hatch. Things like catmint, Russian sage, alfalfa, clover, lavender, and blue spirea are all great plants that are purple that attract bees to your yard. Come and see us at Canyon's Edge Plants for information about bee friendly plants or visit Creek House Honey to learn more about honey bees.
